Green Heat - About Us

Green Heat Ltd was established by the proprietor, Peter Thom, in 1990 with the specific purpose of raising awareness of energy efficiency for the long term benefit of householders and the importance for future generations of conserving the Earth's resources. Green Heat is now one of the country's leading energy efficiency companies, being at the forefront of the development of Green Home Energy Audits and has pioneered the promotion and the concept of energy efficient housing and affordable warmth. The Audit provides valuable information to the home owner on a range of cost effective improvements to reduce running costs and improve comfort conditions and includes an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The EPC is valid for 10 years and is a requirement for all homes that are rented or sold. The Green Home Energy Audit will also provide information and access to Government Initiatives including The Green Deal, The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Feed In Tariffs (FITs).

There are many energy saving options and solutions on the market and there is much misleading information on the performance and suitability of these products. Green Heat provides a truly unbiased service and provides suggestions for the most suitable mix of solutions that are appropriate for each individual home. This includes budget costs, estimated payback/return on capital and environmental impact.

Energy Compliance Calculations for New Homes, Buildings, Extensions and Alterations

The Building Regulations Part L requires that a SAP Energy Rating is calculated to confirm the energy efficiency and the carbon emissions of all new homes to demonstrate compliance. SAP is the Governments Standard Assessment Procedure for energy rating homes and is used to calculate the dwellings Target Carbon Emission Rate (TER) and the Dwelling Carbon Emission Rate (DER). SBEM is used in a similar way for non domestic buildings.

This expert professional service is available to architects, developers, builders, and home owners for extensions and conservatories. Further details can be found on www.sapratings.com.

Central Heating Installations by qualified heating engineers

Central Heating is not a luxury but a necessity and with 84% of energy in the home used for heating and hot water it is essential that energy efficient options are fully considered and evaluated before proceeding to appoint a heating engineer to install your new gas or oil boiler or to design a complete new system. You would not consider asking your local Doctor to carry out open heart surgery so why expect a plumber to expertly design and install a heating system. Always look for a qualified heating engineer who is a member of a professional body and who will work to a Code of Conduct and have appropriate insurance to safeguard you and your home just in case anything should go wrong with such a major investment.

Mains gas will continue to be the most predominant and cost effective option with the least environmental impact although this could change if and when our energy supplies are de-carbonised which is still many years away. So it makes sense to install the most efficient central heating boiler such as ?A? rated condensing boilers which are over 90% efficient compared to older ?G? rated boilers some of which are less than 60% efficient. Green Heat have pioneered the condensing boiler since 1990 and lobbied for these to be a requirement in Building Regulations which eventually happened in 2005 (Read paper presented to IDHEE conference in 1997).

Central Heating boilers and controls have improved dramatically in recent years with the use of electronics to provide accurate, state-of-the-art equipment which really has taken us into the twenty-first century. There are also many new developments such as passive flue heat recovery and energy management controls and the integration of renewable technologies such as solar thermal. Green Heat take pride in keeping up to date with all new developments to enable the best advice to be provided to customers and were one of the first companies to register as heating professionals under the Energy Efficiency Initiative promoted by the Government sponsored Energy Saving Trust. In addition to this Green Heat were founder members of The Heating & Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC) and Peter Thom is a Fellow and past President of the Institute of Domestic Heating and Environmental Engineers and is a board member of both these organisations.
